2018 Boys Autumn Training Squad Selections

Dear Parent, Player

Thank you for all your efforts at the U13-17 trials on Sunday, the standard was very high again this year and all of the selectors have commented on how difficult it has been to make final selections. Please find below the selections that have been made for each Autumn Age Group Training Squads and that will be invited to a Training Program in October 2018.

At the conclusion of the Autumn Training program, a further selection process will take place for a full County and respective County Development squads for each age group to attend a Winter Program after Christmas.

Please note that the selected squads are for the Autumn Training Programme, and do not guarantee selection for the Winter nets and or Summer Match squads. Invitations to the respective Autumn Training Program for the selected boys will be sent out in the forthcoming weeks.

Many congratulations if your name appears on the selected squad lists. If you have missed out this time, please keep on playing and enjoying your cricket. The door to County selection is never closed and a number of players, who we saw performing well for their schools and clubs, were brought into squads last year. Regardless of whether you have been selected or not, we would like to congratulate you on the hard work and the positive attitude you have shown us over the entire process, you should feel very proud of yourself.

We look forward to working with you again in the future.

Kind regards,

Youth Cricket Report Summer 2018

2018 has proved to be another exceptional year for youth representative cricket in Berkshire. We have enjoyed excellent performances from all of our teams, with many outstanding individual performances.

Kamran Khanna and Monty Bradbury have both been selected to play regional cricket at the prestigious U15 Banbury Festival. Jack Davis has again represented England U19s, being an ever present in the youth Test Matches and ODIs against South Africa. We have had over a dozen of our boys playing for County 2nd XIs and both Martin Andersson and Tom Scriven made their professional debuts, for Middlesex and Hampshire respectively, on the same evening in mid August.

James Bird scored the county’s first age group double century, with 218 against Cornwall U17s and Rhodri Lewis emulated the feat the following week against Wiltshire U17s, with 200no. Rhodri’s younger brother, Rhys, scored 135no against Somerset U13s in the same week. We have also seen Michael Williams score two separate centuries for the U17s and young Louis Harris recorded a score of 102 against Devon U10s. There have also been 3 figure scores achieved by Salman Khalid U17s, Aaryan Patel U14s and James Bird, who followed his double hundred with another the following day against Cornwall U17s. James Isabell, with 97no against Wales U11s, and Ed Clark, with 95no against Shropshire U12s, both narrowly missed out.

The outstanding performer with the ball has been Connor Lamsdale, who took 6 for 9 and 5 for 19 on consecutive days, for the U11s, at the Shrewsbury Festival. Other 5 wicket hauls have been claimed by Michael O’Donoghue (EPP XI), Ollie Dunnett (U17s), Sravan Konedina (U15s) and James Newton (U13s).

The U10s have won all of their matches at the Taunton and Ardingly Festivals, so it looks as though Jon Stewart has produced yet another group,of high performing players. The U11s won both the the T20 Cup and the main Festival at Shrewsbury, with Connor Lamsdale winning the bowling award for most wickets and James Isabell winning the batting award for most runs. The U12s won the T20 Cup and were runners up in the main Festival at Shrewsbury. The U14s were runners up in the ECB South and West Championship and the U17s won their ECB regional Championship.

This all adds up to another very pleasing season and we continue to progress as a County.

The Head Partnership have kindly sponsored a player of the month award this season. Connor Lamsdale wins the July award for his 14 wickets at the Shrewsbury Festival and he also managed to record an innings of 70 in the same week. Jacob Phillips wins the award for August. Jacob, an U10, has contributed heavily with the bat all season, but hit a purple patch at the Taunton Festival with scores of 70, 79 and a match winning 87no in the final against Lancashire. Well done boys, you both will receive a £75 voucher from Serious Cricket.

Moving forward, I will be stepping down as Director of Youth Cricket after eight years in charge. I am confident that we have a strong team of people in place who will continue to move things forward. Tom Lambert and Stewart Davison will take control of the strategic direction, from a cricket perspective. Neville Wallace will assume control of the administrative and management side and Richard Hind will take over responsibility for budget setting and cost control. I wish them all the very best for the future and would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the sponsors, coaches, managers, players and parents who have given so much support to my role over the years.

Berkshire Youth Report June 2018

The early season proved to be a case of unsuccessfully dodging showers and the Development Programmes for our Under 10 to U13 age groups really bore the brunt of this. Hastily rearranged matches in the half term, allowed us to catch up and the overall programme was again a huge success. The quality of players produced using this system continues to improve and the early season County matches have been testament to this.

The Under 10s have won matches against Oxfordshire and Hampshire, the standout performance has come from Abdullah Iqbal with 4 for 14.

The U11s have beaten Middlesex and Oxfordshire in their two games to date. James Isbell scored 82no and Alfie Agar 44 against Oxfordshire and Sam Smith took 3 for 14 against Middlesex.

Other standout performances across the age groups include: 83no for Rhys Lewis for the U13s against Hampshire and 62no against Bucks; Charlie Dunnett 58 for the U14s against Wiltshire and 56no against Devon; Ben Moffat has scored two 70s for the U15s against Suffolk and Norfolk; Adam Searle scored 65no for the U15s against Gloucestershire and also took 4 wickets against Norfolk; Henry Daly scored 56 against Cornwall and 63 against Middlesex for the U14s.

The best bowling figures so far have been returned by Oscar Clark who recorded a five wicket haul for the U15s against Devon.

Numerous other boys have scored 50s and taken 3 wickets in matches for the County.

The Head Partnership have kindly sponsored a Player of the Month award for the second season. The winner for June is Liam Hilditch who hit a chanceless 101no against Somerset for the U15s. Congratulations to  Liam, who wins a £75 gift voucher from Serious Cricket.

Kamran Khanna has represented the South and West U15 XI this year and looks well placed to make the squad for the Bunbury Festival.

The highlight so far, for me, this season was attending the recent Middlesex v Hampshire 2nd XI Championship fixture. Six of our boys played in the game, all of them under 20 years old. It was particularly pleasurable watching 16 year old Archie Carter score 32 and 48 on his 2nd team debut, whilst looking comfortable facing an angry and hostile Kyle Abbott.

The Under 17s begin their competitive matches this week, nearly all of the boys have featured in our 1st or 2nd XI’s this season, so we are awaiting their performances with eager anticipation.

Berkshire Cricket Selections Winter 2018

Dear Parent, Player

Berkshire Cricket has been running various courses over the Autumn to provide training and development for boys and girls from U10 through to U17. 360 boys have attended the U1- to U12 Development courses, 109 Girls have attended either a U11/13 development or a U11/13/15 technical session and 185 boys and girls have attended specialist sessions over this time.

The primary aim of the development and technical courses that the boys U10 to U12 and girls U11 to U15 have been attending over the previous 8 weeks has been to improve the basic cricket skill sets of those respective age groups in Berkshire. We have been extremely impressed by the commitment, willingness to learn and playing ability that we have witnessed during this time. We have had a very close look at all of the players in the respective courses over the 8 sessions and have selected a total of 120 girls and 315 boys that we will be invited to be part of a winter development Squad training with the Berkshire County Coaches starting in January 2018.

Please note that the selected squads are for the Winter Training Programme which is part of the Berkshire Cricket Player Pathway Programme, and does not guarantee selection for the Summer Match County and Development squads. Invitations to the winter training program for selected players will be sent out in the forthcoming week.

Mark Allum

Girls Report

In 1999 we started off with a single team of girls that played the Falklands boys in their first ever match. From here we have grown to having 115 girls playing representative cricket for Berkshire which I believe is a fantastic achievement. We have also had one of our most successful seasons in performance cricket – the top divisions in girls cricket in England. Our U13 girls runners up in the League and unbeaten at Malvern festival, our U15 girls unbeaten in their limited overs league. One very notable achievement is our U11 girls being the first ever U11 Berkshire team to only bowl on average around 6 wides or no balls per game (at this age it is normal for around 20 to 30 extras to be bowled).

Our pathway program is starting to show success by having 13 girls who have come through our system playing in our ladies 1st XI this season, even though the results have not gone our way, we have a very young team in place which means we have depth and huge potential for future seasons.

We have also had some outstanding individual performances and achievements from the season –

  • Nicola Lee (u13) – 5th best batter in the ECB County Cup and 3rd best batter out of all Berkshire Teams (Boys/girls through to mens/ladies).
  • Rhiana Heer (U15) 9th best batter out of all Berkshire Teams.
  • Charley Phillips (U15), Lauren Bell (U17) and Anushay Toqir (U13) top 3 best performing Bowlers out of all Berkshire Teams.
  • Lauren Bell’s selection for the Southern Viper’s Squad and also England Women’s Academy.
  • Adele Thomas selection for the National Festivals team tour to Barbados.
  • U13 players – Lauren Turner, Katie Scriven, Maddie Bowsher and Anushay Toqir for their selection in the National Festivals U15 side.

End of season awards went to

  • U11 – Player’s Player – Poppy Tulloch, Most Improved – Molly Bulteel
  • U13 Fawns – Player’s Player – Kali-Ann Docherty, Most Improved – Ruth Payne
  • U13 County – Player’s Player – Lauren Turner, Most Improved – Poppy Evans
  • U15 – Player’s Player – Rhiana Heer, Coaches Award – Lucy Beal
  • U17 – Player’s Player – Rachel Andre, Most Improved – Catherine Guppy

It has been great to see so many girls playing cricket not only for Berkshire but we are now seeing a good set of numbers of girls at younger age groups playing club cricket. We are looking forward to next season as these girls continue to grow and flourish within a very successful pathway program.

Berkshire Youth Cricket Report Summer 2017

2017 has been the most successful season to date for Berkshire Youth Cricket. Our primary measure, to assess the progress we are making is to monitor the individual performance levels of the players in our care.

This year Ryan Higgins and Martin Andersson have made their First Class debuts and, also at the top level, Callum Gregory has just signed his first professional contract with Gloucestershire. 8 teenagers have debuted for Berkshire in Minor counties cricket this year, which obviously hasn’t had a detrimental effect on the team’s performance, as the Berkshire 1st XI became the first side in history to achieve the Championship and Cup double. Euan Woods, Jack Davies and Tom Scriven have all been selected for the England U19s since the turn of the year. Harry Jordan, James Rogers and Archie Carter have recently signed full academy contracts with professional counties. We have had five boys who have played U15 regional cricket for the South and West of England: Hamza Arif, Toby Albert, Raghuv Kanwar, James Langston and Hector Chambers. Hamza and Toby both made the final squad and played in the prestigious Bunbury Festival.

If we produce high quality individual players, inevitably our teams perform well too. It is always a pleasant surprise when this happens, as our focus is always on performances rather than results. This year all of our sides have enjoyed a high level of success:

U10s     Winners of the Taunton Festival

U11s     Winners of the Shrewsbury Festival

U12s      Runners Up at the Taunton Festival

U13s      Runners Up at the Taunton Festival

U14s      Winners of the U14 South and West ECB Championship

U15s      2nd in the U15 South and West ECB Championship

All of these competitions are competed for by the First Class counties, which helps to highlight just how impressive these achievements are.

We are incredibly fortunate to have a team of dedicated and highly professional coaches, who genuinely care about the players in their charge. I’m delighted to report that we will be keeping the same group of senior coaches engaged with us for the 2018 season. My sincere thanks to all of them.

Every year we try to ensure the programme continues to improve and that we increase the opportunities available to our young players. Each year this comes with an increased financial burden, the support we continue to receive from The Head Partnership is invaluable in helping us to keep moving forward.

The Head Partnership have kindly sponsored a monthly prize for the outstanding performances across the age groups. The award for August goes to Connor Lamsdale for scoring a century, against Lancashire, at the U10 Taunton Festival. 50’s at U10 level are a rarity, so to score over 100 is a remarkable achievement. Well done Connor, you will receive a £50 gift voucher to spend at Serious Cricket.

2017 Boys Winter Training Squad Selections

Dear Parent, Player

Thank you for all your efforts at the U13-17 trials on Sunday, the standard was very high again this year and all of the selectors have commented on how difficult it has been to make final selections. Please find below the selections that have been made for each Autumn Age Group Training Squads and that will be invited to a Training Program in October 2017.

Mark Allum

Berkshire Youth Cricket Report July 2017

2017 has proved to be a particularly strong Summer for the Berkshire Youth programme. Our principle focus is always on the quality of players that we produce, rather than the match results at age group level. To date this year, 7 boys under 19 have made their 1st XI debut in Minor Counties’ cricket, we have had 8 of our boys playing 2nd XI cricket for First Class counties and Martin Andersson and Ryan Higgins have both made their First Class debuts. Toby Albert and Hamza Arif both opened the batting for the South and West regional under 15 side at Bunbury and 4 other boys represented the region in the warm up matches.

We are obviously delighted with the recognition that our young players are receiving and individual performances have also translated into team success. Our u11 side recently won the Shrewsbury Festival, remaining unbeaten across the entire week. They also won the T20 competition at this festival. The u10 team has enjoyed a positive start to life in county cricket, with some notable major scalps including Warwickshire. The u14s are currently lying in second place in the ECB South and West Championship and have guaranteed their place in the top tier of u15 county cricket next year. The u15 squad have also had an exceptional season, finishing joint second in the top tier of u15 cricket and narrowly missing out on the national finals.

We have had some excellent individual performances… Joe Sheldon scored 104 not out for the u13s against Bucks. Dan Ormond scored 102 in the u14 match against Hampshire. We have also had some noteworthy bowling performances, Hamza Arif has taken 4 wicket hauls against Somerset and Hampshire and is one of the leading wicket takers in the u15 national championship. James Woodford took 5 for 18 in the u17 match against Dorset.

On the girls front there has been some promising performances from all the age groups. Our U11s have had one of the best season with the ball so far, they have been averaging around 15 extras in a 25 over match compared to their opposition who tend to give away 60 to 70 extras in the same match. This has been a result of the hard work the girls put in over the winter focusing on a good line and length. The U13 county squad have finished 2nd in the A division group 2, only 4 points behind the group winners which has been the best performance from a Berkshire U13 girls team in the performance league. Nicola Lee has made the top 10 best batters in the U13 county cup and is sitting at number 5 with a top score of 88. Our younger age groups have been commended by other teams and coaches on their match awareness and ability to score runs just by rotating the strike. This has all been a result of the indoor league that we have run during the Autumn and Winter with those age groups. A huge benefit to the girls.

Our U15 girls are unbeaten so far but still have 4 games left to play in their Division, let’s hope the weather holds for them as they have a good chance of topping the division. Isabel Clayton’s first season with the county saw her take 5 wickets for 10 runs against formidable opponents Surrey. The U17 girls are finding it a little tougher in their first season in the performance league, the weather also has not don’t them any favours having two of the league matches abandoned which should have been easy wins for them. The Malvern festival was a good outing with 2 wins and 2 losses and some great performances with the bat by Annabel Flack and with the Ball Maddie Brown.

We have been lucky enough to have 4 of our U13 girls selected for the Counties Festival National team. They will be playing two matches against top U15 counties sides during August at the U15 Malvern festival. Congratulations to Katie Scriven, Lauren Turner, Maddie Bowsher and Anushay Toqir

The Head Partnership have generously sponsored a ‘Player of the Month’ award for 2017. The award for June goes to Joe Sheldon and July’s award has been won by Hamza Arif. Both boys receive a £50 voucher from Serious Cricket. The runners up vouchers for £25 have been awarded to Dan Ormond and James Woodford. Very well done to all of you.

Berkshire Youth Cricket Report May 2017

Berkshire Youth cricket has enjoyed a strong start to the 2017 season. A large number of matches have already been played, with virtually none being lost to the weather.

At the younger age groups we have been playing a series of Intra county fixtures, these have proved to be very successful and we have seen a number of players developing at the right time and putting themselves in contention for full county selection. These matches have been organised by the coaches to put the boys in challenging positions, that require them to work out the best solutions. This is a particularly effective learning process for young boys, as they tend not to respond well to being told what to do. We are now going through the selection process for the full county squads and this has never been a more difficult process (for the right reasons due to the high quality of players to choose from).

At representative level, we have 5 boys who have made the final stage of the trial process for the South and West Under 15 squad. Hector Chambers, Hamza Arif, Raghuv Kanwar, Toby Albert and James Langston are all amongst the best 28 boys in our region. At Berkshire First XI level, we have given debuts this Summer to Archie Carter, Jack Davies, Harry Jordan, Mark Firth and Ethan Bamber, all of whom are under 18. The Berkshire Women’s First XI is full of U18 girls. Emma Walker is one of the leading wicket takers in the premier division of the county championship and Catherine Guppy, Lauren Bell, Ashleigh Muttitt, Millie Allerton, Amelia Humphrey, Annabelle Flack and Anna Harris are all making regular appearances.

The Under 15 County boys have enjoyed a solid start to the season, with James Langston and Toby Albert both scoring centuries and Hamza Arif, Raghuv Kanwar and Michael O’Donoghue taking plenty of wickets. The Under 14s have won both of their opening matches in the ECB championship against Gloucestershire and Devon. The Under 15 Development squad had an impressive win over Gloucestershire, with Leo Bangs scoring 94.

The Under 10s and Under 11s have played just one match each, the 10s beat Bucks by 9 wickets and the 11s beat Middlesex by 3 wickets.

The girls’ age group Squads are also performing well, our U11 girls age group have played 3 matches and won 2 of those, but they key thing here is that the losses have been very close which shows the girls work hard right down to the last ball.

Our U13 girl’s age group has been performing well, over half term we held our inaugural QuickIntelligence T20 competition for the Andy Manning Shield which included Somerset, Buckinghamshire, Essex and ourselves. We had a comfortable win over Essex with Nicola Lee scoring 65 not out which placed us in the final against Somerset, another close match but the run rate got away from us in the middle phase and Somerset won by 20 Runs. Our first league match in Group 2A placed us against Warwickshire who are a formidable opponent, however with a good knock by Nicola Lee again (88 runs) and 4 wickets by Anushay Toqir gave us our first win of the League by 52 runs.

The Girls U15 Age group started their league season with a promotion to the Performance T20 competition and two very tough matches against Middlesex and Essex, a notable performance by Isabel Clayton (her debut county match) taking 3 wickets for 2 runs off her first over. Congratulations to the Girls U15 County Coach Emma Boswell on the birth of her Daughter, we wish both of them well.

Our U17 Girls age group were also promoted to the Performance League both for the T20 group. They played their first 2 matches against Cambridgeshire and Norfolk winning both of them comfortably. Notable performances were Lauren Bell 4 wickets for 10 runs off her 3 overs.

Each month this season, The Head Partnership have sponsored a Player of the Month Award. The award for May goes to Emma Walker for her impressive performances with the ball. Emma receives a £50 Serious Cricket voucher. Toby Albert receives a £25 voucher for scoring 2 centuries, one for the Under 15s and one in a South and West Regional trial match. Congratulations to both players.

Berkshire Youth Cricket Report January 2017

The pre-Christmas Development and Specialist sessions have been completed. Record numbers attended these programmes, with 250 boys and girls receiving small group, skill sets and 400 of the younger boys and girls working in larger groups to learn foundation skills.

Selections have been made for the Winter training squads that train between January and April, with 400 boys and girls involved in the full representative programme, across 27 squads.

Much of the good work that we are able to put in place is due to the continued support of The Head Partnership. The Earley and Henley based film of solicitors are currently in their 4th year of sponsorship with us. I hope that all of us can support them, as and when the occasion arises, to ensure that this highly beneficial relationship continues long into the future.

Last year we piloted a scheme with the U10 and U11 boys, whereby no final County selections were made until the end of June. This allowed us to play a programme of Intra-county matches, involving all of the boys involved in the Winter squads, prior to any final selections being made. This proved to be very successful, allowing additional time for the later developers in the squad to acquire the necessary level of skills to play and compete at County level. With this success in mind, we have decided to replicate the  programme for the U12 and U13 boys.

Our EPP programme (high performing boys and girls from U14 to U17), is going from strength to strength and is becoming a high priority focus point for us. We have been very successful in recent years at producing players that are signing for 1st Class County Academies, however we are conscious that we could produce more players that are going on to sign full professional contracts. We see a challenging EPP programme as being essential to build in the qualities of a professional athlete at a young age. We will be looking to test their ability to show resilience, robustness, independent learning and social interaction in both a practice and match play environment.

We are entering into a formal partnership with Middlesex CCC and players are already starting to move both ways within the system. We are looking to place players, across the two counties, into the environment that will enable them to develop in the most efficient and timely manner. In simple terms, the pathway for young players in Berkshire and Middlesex is now as one. This will enable young players in Berkshire to move seamlessly into a 1st Class, professional environment without having to leave our pathway.

There has been a change in focus, with regards to Development squads at U14 to U17 level. Nigel Bruce will head up Development Cricket and the emphasis is very much on retaining players to move into senior adult club cricket. There will be a different slant to the sessions, in order to make them as engaging and enjoyable as possible. There will also be a varied programme of matches in the Summer, to include fixtures against clubs as well as against other County age group sides. Provision has also been made within these sessions to cater for players who have the aspiration to move into full County squads.

Obviously we will be looking to make County and EPP sessions an enjoyable experience too, but the emphasis will be strongly placed on challenging the players and preparing them to play at the higher levels of the game. We expect players, who are selected in County squads, to have the aspiration to play representative cricket at a higher level than Berkshire Age Group cricket.

The measure of our success as a County will continue to be based on the progress our young players are able to make. We aspire to retain more of our players within the club game and to produce an over supply of players, with the ability and desire, to move into professional cricket.

Mark Allum

Director of Berkshire Youth Cricket.

Berkshire Youth Cricket Report July 2016

Boys Report

July has proved to be an excellent month for youth representative cricket in Berkshire. The age groups are all performing above expectations and there have been numerous outstanding individual performances. Please see below for leading individual contributions.

Will Neal represented the South and west Region at the U15 Bunbury Festival. Ollie Dunnett, Archie Carter, Jarryd Wallace and Hamza Arif have also represented the region at this level.

The U10 county boys won the Taunton Festival, beating Lancashire, Yorkshire and Surrey to the title. The U11 county boys were runners up at both the Shrewsbury and Taunton Festivals, beating numerous top counties in the process. Rhys Lewis won the award for Leading Batsman at Shrewsbury and Adil Mohammed picked up the Leading All-Rounder trophy. The U12 county boys went one better, winning the Shrewsbury Festival. Charlie Dunnett was named Leading Batsman of the tournament and Kishore Naha won the Leading Bowler award.

The U15 County boys have won their league and are playing Kent in the National semi finals next week. Archie Carter and Ollie Dunnett have both recorded two centuries in this competition and are amongst the leading run scorers in the country.

The U13s have been dominant in their fixtures and although they have not played any competition cricket, they have claimed many ‘first class’ county scalps already this season. The most pleasing being an 8 wicket victory against Surrey.

The primary focus of the age group programme is to create and develop young players in the county. To record 48 individual half centuries  and 9 centuries during July is a fantastic endorsement of the progress our young cricketers are making. We have also had 15 bowling performances of 4 wickets or more, during this period.

This level of performance is the result of countless hours of hard work that is put in by the players and coaches. The unseen work that happens on the practice grounds, underpins the end product that we see in matches. We are very fortunate to be able to use excellent training facilities at Reading Blue Coat School and extremely grateful that sponsorship from The Head Partnership covers the cost of this for us.

This month’s £50 Serious Cricket voucher, for outstanding performance, goes to James Bird. James followed up his maiden county century with a second one four days later. Congratulations James your award is very well deserved.” – Mark Allum, Director of Berkshire Youth Cricket

Girls Report

The girls Cricket has shown vast improvements this season, with Berkshire once again showing that we are a very strong bowling side with some good performances in that field. We are starting to dominate in the 2nd Divisions across all age groups and in the U13s in the performance league are competing very well with some very close matches against some of the strongest teams in the country. Our U13 County girls were also winners of the Buckinghamshire 8-aside Tournament.

August sees the start of the Malvern and Radley festivals for our girls, where they are exposed to some very good cricket but at the same time ensuring we continue forward with our development of players which of course does include the fun aspect to where our U11 and U13 teams have a competition amongst themselves to see who can be the best sport on and off the field but still being able to put forward some of the best figures of each festival. You may have seen some of the photos from our U13 Fawns and U11 county girls on our twitter feed sporting some funky hats and matching hairdos.

As with boys the primary focus of the girls age group programme is to create and develop young players in the county. This has been shown by some of our younger players (Adele Thomas, Charlotte Aird, Millie Quaintance) representing Berkshire in the Malvern National U13 side. Also a promising Player Mia Rogers achieving a very good effort with the bat against Bedfordshire of 78 runs. Many of our players across the age groups have performed well with the ball and the has been a flurry of wickets for many girls, top performers so far have been Amann Baig and Lauren Bell from U15, both taking 6 wickets each in a single match.

Berkshire Youth Cricket Report June 2016

June has proved to be a difficult month for youth representative cricket in Berkshire. The performances and results have been good, but the wet weather has devastated our planned programme.

Boys Report

The limited amount of matches played have produced three exceptional batting performances; Archie Carter hit an unbeaten 115, as the Under 15s chased down 230 to beat Cornwall with 13 overs to spare. Ollie Dunnett, coming to the wicket with the score on 41 for 4, guided the Under 15s to 268 with an individual contribution of 106 against Dorset. Rhys Lewis hit 130 not out against Buckinghamshire, as the Under 11s handed out a crushing defeat to our near neighbours.

The best all round performance of the month was recorded by Michael O’Donoghue, who scored 49no, batting at number 9, against Oxfordshire Under 14s. He then followed this up with a, match winning, 5 wicket haul in the second innings.

Will Neal, Archie Carter and Jarryd Wallace have all represented the South and West Region at Under 15 level this year, this is the third successive year that we have had three of our players reach this level. Will Neal has been selected to represent the South and West in the prestigious Bunbury Regional festival.

We are continuing to see many of our young players representing the full Berkshire 1st XI and all are making telling contributions with both bat and ball. Mark Firth is the latest to be selected into the match squad, which is now full of young players who are still in, or have recently come through the youth pathway.

We are just about to enter into the phase of the season where the bulk of our match programme takes place. The Under 10 squad travels to the Taunton Festival next week, the Under 11s are going to both the Shrewsbury and Taunton Festivals and the Under 13s also travel to Taunton. Hopefully the weather will prove to be kinder to us during this period and there will be far more matches to report on next time.

Girls Report

The girls are once again proving to be a bowling team across all age groups with some great performances by players from U11 to U17. At

U11 against Buckinghamshire we have had Annie Akers taking 3 for 11, Aniela Baumgart taking 3 for 9 and Anushay Toqir hitting 38 runs off 35 balls.

Our U13s have also had a very wet start to the season with many games called off or postponed to the weather. Two very promising starts so far with close losses to Middlesex, best performer was Nicola Lee taking 3 wickets for 7 runs.

At U15 a great nock by Mia Rogers achieving 78 against Bedfordshire and both Amann Baig (Against Bedfordshire) and Lauren Bell (Against Huntingdonshire) taking 6 wickets each.

Showing that our bowling is still a major strength for the U17s Emma Walker took 3 for 8 runs against Buckinghamshire.

The girls are showing great progress over the season so far, this is notable by our Girls U13 Development (Fawns) with 3 girls having now been invited to play up in the U13 county side. Best bowling performance for the fawns for June was 2-1 for Poppy Evans (Northants).  Also promising batting from Molly Rogers 28 (Oxfordshire) and Miranda Clegg 28 (Essex).
Congratulations goes to Millie Quaintance, Charlotte Aird and Adele Thomas from our U13s having been selected to play in a National representative side against U15 and U17 county girls during the Malvern Festival on the 2-4th August and 11 & 12 August.

Performance Award

Ollie Dunnett receives The Head Partnership Player of the Month Award for June. Congratulations Ollie, £50 of Serious Cricket vouchers are making their way to you.

Berkshire Youth Cricket Report May 2016

“Berkshire’s Youth Squads have enjoyed a positive start to the 2016 season, with strong performances being turned in by all of the age groups. The ECB league matches begin later this week and the warm up cycle of friendly matches are nearing completion, for the age groups involved in these competitions.

One of the new initiatives for this season has been a programme of Development fixtures for the U10 and U11 boys. These matches have allowed 84 boys to play in competitive fixtures, that provide a step up from the challenge that is offered in club cricket. There have been numerous encouraging individual and team performances and overall the games have proved to be a huge success.

We have also begun the programme of U13 Development fixtures, with 2 rounds of matches already played and the 3rd round taking place this Sunday. As with the U10 and U11 Development fixtures, these matches are positioned as a stepping stone into county cricket. It is pleasing to see that strong individual performances have already been rewarded with selection into county sides.

Will Neal has been selected to play for The South and West Under 15 side this week. This representative side is picked from 12 counties in the region, so is a fantastic achievement for Will. We are also seeing a number of our young players playing in the Berkshire 1st XI, Euan Woods, Callum Gregory, Martin Andersson and Billy Rogers are all playing regularly. Lauren Bell and Rachel Hardy are also youth players who are regularly being selected to play in the Women’s 1st XI.

The Head Partnership Solicitors have kindly agreed to extend their sponsorship of Berkshire Youth Cricket. The finance they provide is fundamental to our ability to run representative programmes for over 400 young players. It is really important that in return for their backing we, as a cricket community,  make every effort to support our sponsors. Please take the time to have a look around their website and, if you have need of any legal services, please give them the opportunity to quote for the work.

To relaunch the deal with The Head Partnership, England cricket legend David Gower, visited our outdoor centre at Reading Blue Coat School. David opened the centre 3 years ago and was keen to see how the facility has developed over that time. If you click on the following link, you can see a video of David and myself having a conversation about the development of the centre:

Finally, The Head Partnership have introduced a ‘Performance of the Month’ award. The award for May goes to Hector Chambers, who scored 108 and then backed that up with 3 for 17 in the same match against Buckinghamshire. Well done Hector, £50 of Serious Cricket vouchers are winding their way to you.” – Mark Allum, Director of Berkshire Youth Cricket

“We are delighted to enter into this three year sponsorship deal with The Head Partnership. The integrity of the Berkshire Cricket brand is of paramount importance to us, so to partner with a local company who enjoy such a fine reputation for excellent service, in and around Berkshire, is a very positive development for us.

The finance that we have received will enable us to fully fund the cost of the new Outdoor Cricket Centre at Reading Blue Coat school for the next three years. This is a significant move forward for Berkshire Cricket and one that will benefit all of our children.

We all require the services of a good solicitor from time to time and I would fully endorse The Head Partnership”. – Mark Allum, Chariman of Youth Cricket, Berkshire Cricket Ltd.

We were the first ever sponsors of Berkshire Cricket in the early 1990’s and are very pleased to get this opportunity to return and support Berkshire Cricket by agreeing a 3 year sponsorship of the youth teams and squads.

Our sponsorship coincided with and supports the launch of the Berkshire Youth Cricket Outdoor Centre at Reading Blue Coat School.  This central location in the county is available to all of the squads for regular training services during the season and a third of the youth district and county fixtures will be hosted there this season.
