My legal career began when I left school at 16 and my neighbour was working at a local firm of solicitors. She knew I was looking to get into a secretarial position, and they had a temporary opening. That then led to me being offered a permanent position starting as an ‘Office Junior’. I worked my way up in various departments and ended up staying there for over 15 years until I started my family.
Traditionally, secretaries were primarily responsible for administrative tasks but now there is more of a hands-on emphasis to my role in supporting the solicitors and legal executives in my team. This increased involvement gives me more opportunities for professional growth, expand my knowledge, and keeps things interesting.
I really enjoy problem solving and also dealing with a wide variety of work within the department. What I do is more diverse these days and requires more collaboration with other members of the team. I still enjoy being able to speak to prospective and existing clients as it’s nice to be able to help them when they call us or visit the office.
THP is a great and busy place to work. Everyone is really friendly, and my colleagues were so welcoming when I first joined the firm which made settling in a pleasure. The team are very helpful if I need them – nothing is too much trouble. There’s a wide range of age groups at THP all of whom have a variety of knowledge and experience which I find makes a refreshing change.
The role of a legal secretary has come a long way, evolving from traditional administrative support to a key member of the team who can contribute to the success of the firm. It’s a good way to get into the legal sector and I would recommend trying to work in a variety of departments to help you decide what you enjoy best and excel in.
