Three questions with Supriya

What was your first job?

My first proper job (I’m not counting my summer job working in Clarks shoes) was as a legal secretary in the conveyancing department of a Henley law firm. I didn’t know it then, but that job would form the basis of my career. I went on to work in residential property teams in law firms across the Thames Valley, before a decade later, returning to Henley, now as a qualified solicitor, at THP. I love the area and the local residents, so it’s good to be back. It just goes to show that life is a circle, not a straight line!

What does a residential property solicitor do?

In a nutshell, we transfer property ownership from one person to another. That sounds simple, but it is a complicated process as it involves a lot of legal enquiries, searches, scrutiny, and administration to ensure that the relevant law is complied with. In addition to the conveyancing, there are many more compliance requirements than there used to be, and these are mandatory, such as checking on sources of funds to prevent money laundering, ID verifications, etc. We are also here to advise our clients and ask questions of the other side. We produce reports highlighting any risks or issues so our clients can make informed decisions before proceeding with a property transaction.

What has been your biggest personal achievement?

Well, not to be boring (I honestly have other interests other than property), but my biggest achievement is saving up enough money to buy my first house on my own. I was determined to get on the property ladder by the age of 30, but all my early savings went into paying for the fees for my legal qualifications, so once that was out of the way, I had to start from scratch again. I just met my self-set target by buying my house at 29. It’s still a buzz to be a homeowner, and I can relate to the first-time buyers I advise as they yo-yo between nerves and excitement as we progress through their first house purchase. I’ve now got a new goal to pay off my mortgage by 45…we’ll see how that goes!
